Diamond Head State Monument

One of Hawai’i’s most recognizable landmarks in the world, Diamond Head State Monument is a breathtaking sight witnessed from land, sea, or air. Founded on 475 acres across a 300,000 year-old volcanic crater, the summit at Diamond Head crater is a short, steep hike out of Honolulu and into the clouds. With unparalleled views of O’ahu’s shoreline, Diamond Head is the perfect destination for anyone looking for adventure.

FAQs

Do I need a reservation to visit Diamond Head?

Yes. All out-of-state visitors and commercial vehicles are now required to have a reservation prior to arrival. Slots are limited and often sell out weeks in advance. If you book one of our professional diamond head tours, we handle the logistical heavy lifting and entry requirements so you can focus on the view.

The trail is a 1.6-mile round trip and is considered moderately challenging. While the path is paved, it is steep and includes two major sets of stairs (74 steps and 99 steps, respectively) and a 225-foot dark tunnel. Because of the incline and stairs, the summit trail is not wheelchair accessible.

Most hikers prefer the early morning slots (starting at 6:00 AM) to beat the intense midday heat and catch the sunrise over the Pacific. However, afternoon diamond head tours often see slightly thinner crowds. Remember, the last entry is at 4:00 PM, and the park gates close strictly at 6:00 PM.

Preparation is key for a comfortable hike. We recommend:

  • Sturdy Footwear: Athletic shoes or hiking sandals (no flip-flops).
  • Hydration: At least 32oz of water per person.
  • Protection: SPF 30+ sunscreen and a hat, as there is very little shade on the trail.
  • Camera: To capture the 360-degree views of Waikiki and the South Shore.

Restrooms and water fountains are available at the trailhead (the base of the crater), but there are no facilities once you begin the ascent. Be sure to use the facilities and fill your water bottles before starting your climb.
